The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company is the Festival’s own, professional Company and is often likened to an updated version of the original D’Oyly Carte Opera Company established by Gilbert & Sullivan almost 150 years ago.
It is the only British, professional company to exclusively stage and perform Gilbert & Sullivan and offers major theatres around the UK four different shows each season.
In 2017 the Opera Company will perform four brand-new productions of The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and Princess Ida. The Opera Company tours with their own National Gilbert & Sullivan Orchestra. The 24-piece orchestra plays Sullivan ‘as it should be played” and features professional musicians with vast experience recognized as the specialist orchestra for Gilbert & Sullivan.
This year the Opera Company is delighted to announce the appointment of two new Directors – Vivien Coates and Michael McCaffery. Vivien will direct Princess Ida and The Pirates of Penzance and Michael McCaffery will direct The Mikado. Donald Maxwell returns to direct a brand-new production of HMS Pinafore.
