|10:30||G&S On Ageing||Adriane Berg||Utopia Theatre||£7.50|
The next time an actor complains that there are no roles for older performers, refer them to G&S. In this unique review of the canons as it treats men and women of a certain age, you will get insights on how the Victorians viewed ageing. Gilbert’s betrayal of the fierce older woman who unaccountably gets the man and the older man depicted as formidable and wise. But G&S also display a fair mix of the pain of physical decline, ridicule and the uselessness of the old by the young and the pathos of love in old age. Adriane Berg, and Emmy-award winning broadcaster and host of the American radio show Generation Bold, the Fountain of Truth about ageing, discusses the topic with videos of some of the most beautiful and comical songs to illustrate the enduring issues of ageing as presented by Gilbert & Sullivan.

|14:30 & 19:30||Trial by Jury & The Sorcerer||The National G&S Opera Co.||The Royal Hall||£25 – £45|
A magical double bill of two Gilbert & Sullivan favourites.
Trial by Jury is a delightful, one act operetta about the glamorous Angelina, jilted by her dastardly fiancee Edwin. She decides to sue him for breach of promise of marriage. The judge and indeed all the members of the jury fall for Angelina’s charms so will she finally manage to walk down the aisle?
Gilbert’s wit is brilliant and Sullivan’s music at its best, so no wonder Trial by Jury has been referred to as “probably the most successful British one-act operetta of all time”. A joy!
The Sorcerer is a rare opportunity to see a magical Gilbert and Sullivan show that seldom gets a professional outing. The plot of The Sorcerer is based on a Christmas story, An Elixir of Love, that Gilbert wrote for The Graphic magazine in 1876.
Love potions, a sorcerer and his magic spells…..what could possibly go wrong? Don’t miss this spellbinding production directed by John Savournin and conducted by the equally magical James Hendry.
